July 16/17, 2022

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. Prov 9:10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Prov 1:7

~~ The Fear of the Lord Is the Beginning of Wisdom ~~

●      The fear of the Lord leads to a right view of life.

○     Fear of the Lord: An awe of God based on who He is

○     Fear of the Lord: An awe of God based on who we are

▪  God is above you.

▪  God is to be honored.

▪    God is to be trusted.

▪    God’s Word is to be obeyed.

. . . when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God at the place that he will choose, you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner within your towns, that they may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law, . . .  Deut 31:11-12

○     The Beginning of Knowledge:  The Best Way to Live

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, . . . Mt 7:24-28

●      Lacking the fear of the Lord leads to the wrong view of life.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Prov 1:7

○     The fool despises the Lord’s wisdom.

▪   The fool is the person who is morally flawed.

▪    Wisdom is the capacity to judge rightly.

○     The fool despises the Lord’s discipline.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Prov 1:7

●      The fear of the Lord is found in the Lord’s love for us.

“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do.  But I will warn you whom to fear:  fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.  Yes, I tell you, fear him!  Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?  And not one of them is forgotten before God.  Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered.  Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Luke 12:4-7

○     Jesus instructs us to fear God because of His sovereignty.

“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do.  But I will warn you whom to fear:  fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.  Yes, I tell you, fear him!” Luke 12:4-5

○     Jesus instructs us to not fear God because of His salvation.

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?  And not one of them is forgotten before God.  Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered.  Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7
