Top Highlights

“He says he wants to come to Rome ‘by the will of God.’ I believe he went there by the will of God” (Page 29)

“‘It’s not thy hope in Christ which saves you. It’s Christ. It’s not thy joy in Christ that saves you. It is Christ. And it is not thy faith in Christ that saves you, though that be the instrument, it is Christ’s blood and merit.’” (Page 68)

“We died to sin in Christ—that’s our position—but we are never dead to sin in this life” (Page 106)

“This universe in which you and I live tells two things about God: His person and His power.” (Page 36)

“You are saved by faith. You are to live by faith. You are to walk moment by moment by faith. You cannot live for God by yourself any more than you can save yourself. It requires constant dependence upon Him, looking to the Lord Jesus Christ by the power of the Spirit.” (Page 119)

J. Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. As a student pastor, Dr. McGee's first church was located on a red clay hill in Midway, Georgia. After completing his education (earning his A.B. from Southwestern University in Memphis, Tennessee; his B.D. from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia; his Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas), and after pastoring Presbyterian churches in Decatur, GA, Nashville, TN, and Cleburne, TX, he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, where he accepted a call to the Lincoln Avenue Presbyterian Church. He recalls this period as the happiest in his life, with a young family and a young congregation whom he loved.
