Overview

Alexander MacLaren (1826–1910) is ranked among the expert expositors of the nineteenth century. His life was passionately devoted to the study of Scripture and to the pulpit ministry. His career was marked by a faithful commitment to both his church community and to the integrity of the Baptist tradition. His writings and reputation were world renown, and his skill with the English language and ability to handle the biblical languages has inspired students of Holy Scripture for decades. Even to this day, MacLaren is considered to be a prime exemplar of expository preaching. Top Highlights

“Sin broke familiar communion with God, turned Him into a ‘fear and a dread,’ and sent the guilty pair into ambush” (Page 9)

“God desires to go, if we do not desire Him to stay. He will go, unless we keep Him.” (Page 227)

“God mercifully restrains His hand, in His merciful striving with men. Desiring to overcome them, He desires not to do so by mere superior power, but by their willing yielding to Him.” (Page 226)

“But we are taught that our acts of worship must have our hearts in them, and that it is vain to pray and to love evil.” (Pages 15–16)
