Overview

Timothy Keller’s Romans 1–7 for You is a personal or group study that walks you through the book of Romans, showing how it transforms hearts and lives today. Designed as an easily readable resource, this text takes you to the heart of Paul’s theological masterwork and offers guidance in applying the truths found there. Covering the first half of Romans, this resource can be used as a guide to the letter, helping you appreciate the great gift of righteousness before God, and as a daily devotional to help you grow in Christ as you meditate on this portion of God’s Word. Notes are also included to aid you in explaining, illustrating, and applying Romans 1–7 as you preach or lead a Bible study. Whoever you are, and however you use it, this is Romans 1–7 for you. Romans 1–7 for You is designed to work alongside The Gift of God, Timothy Keller’s Bible study resource for small groups and individuals.

Top Highlights

“Put most simply, the gospel is an announcement—a declaration. The gospel is not advice to be followed; it is news, good (eu) news about what has been done.” (Page 12)

“The main problem of our heart is not so much desires for bad things, but our over-desires for good things, our turning of created, good things into gods, objects of our worship and service.” (Page 29)

“This is an obedience that comes from faith—that springs from a wholehearted trust in Jesus, God’s Son. Obedience flows out of faith; it is a consequence of saving faith, not a second condition for salvation.” (Page 14)

“God’s judgment on godlessness and wickedness is to give us what we want.” (Page 29)

“But the Greek word underlying it, elpis, means a conviction. Christian hope is not a hopeful wish—it is a hope-filled certainty.” (Page 111)

This is a very nice, easy-to-read introduction to the first half of Paul's Letter to the Romans. Each passage (typically about half a chapter) is approached in 2 parts with questions at the end of each part - thus making this book ideal for personal study or for group study. I do enjoy Keller's approach and I think he brings out the basics of Romans quite well. Also the two appendices - especially the on on idolatry was very much appreciated - a nice inclusion. As was the Bibliography!
