It is a generally acknowledged fact both among Old Testament scholars and New Testament scholars, as well as among experts in the literature of early and later Judaism, that the correlation of law and wisdom is of paramount importance for Jewish and Christian theology and ethics. It is therefore all the more surprising that this correlation has never been the subject of a major monograph. The present study was written to fill this apparent gap and to make a contribution to the investigation of the theology of early Judaism and early Christianity, focusing on the correlation of law and wisdom in Ben Sira, in other early Jewish documents including Qumran, and in the thinking of Paul the Apostle.
Eckhard J. Schnabel is the Mary F. Rockefeller Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
