On the 1500th anniversary of the death of St. Jerome, Pope Benedict XV released Spiritus Paraclitus to commemorate this remarkable figure and to encourage the study of Scripture—something that was so dear to the heart of Jerome’s life and work. Building upon the work of Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical Providentissimus Deus, Benedict highlights the principles of the authority and inerrancy of the Bible that Jerome argued for so persuasively that remain as important today as they were in the fourth century.
