Henry Edward Manning explains various aspects of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In the preface he states, “The devotion of the Sacred Heart has two aspects: the one as the center of all dogma; the other as the source of the deepest devotion.” Manning addresses the dogmatic side of the devotion, believing that “when divine truth is fully … apprehended it generates devotion.”
“Every one, therefore, who is born again has this knowledge of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by the light of faith.” (Page 106)
“Nevertheless, its chief characteristic and its dominant note is His disappointment at the returns we make to Him for His love, and above all, His divine displeasure at the faults and sins of those who are specially consecrated to His service.” (Page viii)
