One of twenty volumes in this series, edited by Max Anders, Holman Old Testament Commentary: Genesis is purposefully designed with its verse-by-verse commentary for Bible study and teaching to enrich the local church and all the people of God. Discussion starters, teaching plan, and more are all included in order to be most effective and useful for lay teachers and pastors alike.
Whether teacher, pastor, or layperson, everyone in the contemporary church is desperate for quality resources for Bible teaching. The Holman Old Testament Commentary is specially designed to provide spiritual sustenance in a manner that is accessible to a wide variety of teachers without sacrificing the depth in its content. The format emphasizes understanding the teaching principles of Scripture in conjunction with relevant and contemporary application.
“When our timid faith becomes tested faith, it can turn into triumphant faith. But it all begins with an acceptance of God’s substitutionary atonement.” (Pages 198–199)

“The creative Word will turn chaotic matter into that which has structure and order” (Page 11)
“Abraham to offer up his son Isaac without thinking of the willingness of God to offer up His son Jesus. God provided a lamb to take the place of Isaac, but there was no lamb to take the place of Jesus. He was the Lamb! You and I have our life and our salvation and our hope of eternity because of what God has done for us in Christ; and the only way this world will ever come to know the salvation we know will be by way of our faithfulness. God expects us to be faithful’” (Page 199)
“Without Genesis much teaching in subsequent Scripture, including the New Testament, would be unclear or unintelligible. In his commentary on Genesis 1–11, Kenneth Mathews says, ‘If we possessed a Bible without Genesis, we would have a ‘house of cards’ without foundation or mortar’ (Mathews, 22).” (Page 4)
