Overview

A scientific look at creationism from a former creationist.

According to a recent Gallup Poll, almost 40 percent of Americans believe that sometime in the last 10,000 years Earth and humankind were created in their present form—the rationale being that this is (presumably) the story told in the book of Genesis. Within that group, any threatening scientific evidence that suggests otherwise is rejected or, when possible, retrofitted into a creationist worldview.

But can this uncomfortable blend of biblical literalism and pseudoscience hold up under scrutiny? Is it tenable to believe that the Grand Canyon was formed not millions of years ago by gradual erosion but merely thousands of years ago by the Great Flood? Were there really baby dinosaurs with Noah on his ark?

Janet Kellogg Ray, a science educator who grew up a creationist, doesn’t want other Christians to have to do the exhausting mental gymnastics she did earlier in her life. Working through the findings of a range of fields including geology, paleontology, and biology, she shows how a literal interpretation of the book of Genesis simply doesn’t mesh with what we know to be reality. But as someone who remains a committed Christian, Ray also shows how an acceptance of the theory of evolution is not necessarily an acceptance of atheism, and how God can still be responsible for having created the world, even if it wasn’t in a single, momentary, miraculous event.

Top Highlights

“When biologists reject evolution, however, it is for religious reasons, not a lack of science evidence” (Page 45)

“Intelligent design explains these apparent relationships as the mark of a common designer who employs similar designs in similar ways. As a result, species appear to have a history that they in fact they do not have—just like our (brand-new) muddy and worn-out designer jeans.” (Pages 141–142)

“The evolution of dissimilar species from a common ancestor is hard for many to accept. The more we know about control genes, the more we understand how it happened.” (Page 133)

“In other words, Darwin was the first to advance an idea of how change happened” (Page 34)

“are still quite fishy but have definite limbs. In these younger animals” (Page 122)

This is a well-written, insightful, and accessible book with pitch-perfect and well-balanced tone. I couldn’t help but to be drawn into the stories that punctuated the treatment.

And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. - Genesis 1:31 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens - Genesis 2:1-4 In the beginning God created the heavens (shamayim) and the earth (eretz). - Genesis 1:1 Ex. 20:1   And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:1-11 Note... it is God himself speaking... and note He tells us exactly how many days... For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:11 One must remember that evolution is a theory and not a scientific law. Proponents have been searching for solid evidence of transitional forms for over 150 years and have come up pathetically empty. The deep time (long ages) needed for "chance" to postulate a beneficial mutation are all based upon extrapolations from a non-random sample of rates during less than 120 years of observation. If you remember your statistics, you remember that the sample size has to be representative of the population (entire dataset). The measurement of deep time using radiometric dating methods fails this test. the sample is all clumped up into at most 120 years at our end of the 4.5 billion years of the earth's age. That fails the randomness test. Furthermore, do the math 120/4,500,000,000 and you find that the sample size fails that test as well. (120÷4,500,000,000 = 0.000000026666667 or 2.666667 millionths of 1% of the claimed age of the earth. Bottomline.... evolution doesn't even pass muster as a theory. I say this after 20 years in the private sector (Information Technology) and 20 more as an educator in public education. I wrestled with this issue in college. I came to a roadblock and was stuck until a science professor offered some extra credit to those of us who wanted it if we were to attend a debate between the President of the Western Anthropological Society ( a radiocarbon 14 expert) and some scientist who had worked for DuPont. I was trying to get all A's and jumped at the opportunity. I went to the debate and Cypress College in California and came away stunned. I had never heard the information I encountered there. It was new to me. I had, however, debated in High School in the team and was very familiar with debate. The scientist, Dr. Duane Gish, had crushed the radiocarbon 14 expert in his own area of expertise. Like I said, I was stunned. I had to know more about this. So I now have some books to read... what I read and struggled through changed my life. I have had a keen interest throughout the ensuing years, and thus my interest in this book. I too have been there and understand. Scientists are, sadly, not objective. ( remember Ignaz Semmelweiss, the Thalidomide scandal, and now the "COVID vaccine" scandal). Theories are not facts, and evolution is a theory. Consider these as well... Psalm 1:1, 14:1 Beware of "science falsely so called" and study to show yourself approved (be a Berean). Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. 20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: 21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. - 1 Timothy 6:19 IF you are seeking thoroughly vetted information on this subject I suggest a search on Dr. Henry Morris and his works here on Logos. One that I read that was seminal was The Genesis Flood, another was Many Infallible Truths. I don't believe Logos caries it and it may be difficult to find, but Dr. Robert Gentry's work on Polonium Halos... Creation's Tiny Mystery... I believe you can read it here www.halos.com_book_ctm-toc_htm Much, much more can be delved into, but there is not room. Jesus claimed to be one with the Father and Jesus is the creator. In John 14:6, Jesus claims to be The Truth. I came to the conclusion that I would trust in Jesus, the Creator, rather than men who are flawed like me. If evolution is right... there is no God and no eternal consequence.... no heaven, no hell. Jesus said that unless we believe in him.... we will perish. I encourage you, reader, to do your homework, to study to show yourself approved, a workman rightly dividing the word of truth. Trust in Jesus.

I am sure this review will be deleted as my previous one saw, but I will try to leave one again and hope for the best. In this book preview on pages, 82-82 under the heading, Canyon Evidence, the author writes, "If a single catastrophic flood—a single surge of rushing water—was responsible for carving the geologic features of the earth such as the Grand Canyon, what would we expect to see?" No YEC, to my knowledge, states that the canyon was formed by a "single surge of rushing water." From what I have read from YEC literature, and I have read a lot on this issue, while YEC believes there was one flood, they also believe that there were many surges during and after the flood. On top of that, years later, there was also flooding as large bodies of water, the size of large lakes, also flooded canyons after several lakes burst from their make-shift dams, like the great Missoula flood, for example. This explains many of the features found in the Grand Canyon and others like it. Sadly, the author seems to be unaware of what, from my knowledge, all YEC says about this issue. I wish the author would have quoted the YEC scientists who believe what the authors say they believe there may be some, but I am not aware of them. The other preview chapters do the same from what I read, so it was a bit disappointing. I had hoped the book would have interacted with what creationists are actually presenting. Instead, the book builds strawmen for the purpose of tearing them down. While some YEC creationists may believe what the author says they believe, I have not seen any. From my reading of the preview, the rest of the book seems to take this same course of action to build straw men, so the author has something to tear down. I was only able to read the preview so take this review for what it is. The rest of the book may interact well with actual YEC arguments, but I have to wait for it to come out to be sure. I hope this review is not taken down, it does interact with what the author wrote, but it is limited to what the preview reveals. Thank you, and God bless
