Overview

First in a series of looking at culture & context of preaching & teaching. Bible Delight unlocks Psalm 119 and explains –

  • How to be delighted in the Bible
  • How to get your bearings in the longest psalm
  • What each of the 22 sections means
  • What your reaction should be through Personal Response Questions

  • This is the first in a series of books that looks at the culture and context of preaching and teaching God’s Word. We need help not just in ‘how to preach Bible books’, but clarity on the point and purpose of preaching and teaching. The books in this series will be short and accessible, ideal for personal use, group study or for training.

Christopher Ash’s book is an excellent foundation for the series. It gets us to the heart of our motivation to preach and teach. In his own words: ‘we preach out of Bible delight in our own hearts and for Bible delight in our hearer’s souls.’ Christopher’s Bible material is Psalm 119 – the great psalm of Bible delight!

“While the primary purpose of the book is to stimulate Bible delight in teachers and hearers of God’s Word, the book would be ideal guide to tackling a preaching or teaching series on Psalm 119.” -David Jackman & Robin Sydserff

If you are looking for a resource on Psalm 119 that covers nearly all you will need to teach, apply, preach, and understand themes and theological connections, this is the one! Sure, you won't get detailed Hebrew analysis. But you will find more helpful words here to build a lesson/sermon. It takes each Hebrew letter (all 8 verses of each) and treats it with care. You will find themes, connections, cross reference, application, and Jesus here. I have many top level commentaries on the Psalms. Only some of those are helpful when it comes to Psalm 119. Then, they were only mildly helpful. This book shows you structure, idea, biblical theology and more. It is also superior to what this same author (Christopher Ash) offers you in his full Psalms commentary. That is a good commentary on individual Psalms . . . but it lacks on Psalm 119. This is totally the resource you should go for, especially if you intend to do multiple lessons/sermons on Psalm 119. Other books that are exclusive of Psalm 119 also do not compare to what this one offers for the teacher/preacher. If you need more word analysis, it is true that Zemek's "The Word of God in the Child of God" does deliver there, but it won't compare to the application you find here in "Bible Delight." There is much content here, you will not be under served by this resource. I highly recommend it as the top resource covering Psalm 119.
