Overview

What does the Letter to the Hebrews have to say to Christians today?

A compelling exhortation to hold true to the faith in the face of adversity. A sermon rife with iconic imagery and Old Testament allusions. A signal work of theology in the New Testament.

Above all, the Letter to the Hebrews proclaims the high priesthood of Jesus Christ. But the book’s textual complexity and long history of interpretation can be overwhelming. In this new Pillar commentary, Sigurd Grindheim illuminates the Letter to the Hebrews, paying careful attention to linguistic features and historical context—all while centering its relevance to modern readers.

Grindheim clearly and comprehensively addresses major issues about the text, including authorship, date, canonicity, formal qualities, and major themes. Following his thorough introduction, he explains each line of the text and its significance for believers today. Grindheim’s commentary offers pastors, students, and scholars the clarity and fresh insights they want in their scriptural study.

Sigurd Grindheim’s Hebrews (PNTC) is a fitting and rigorous successor to Peter O’Brien’s previous volume. Grindheim, an accomplished Norwegian scholar, opens with a fresh examination of Hebrews’ authorship, structure, audience, and theology. He argues persuasively for Apollos as the likely author and highlights the letter’s unmatched rhetorical brilliance. His approach is deeply textual, canonical, and theological—interpreting Scripture with Scripture, and grounding Hebrews’ Christology in both OT typology and eternal sonship. Key themes include intimacy with God, the finality of Christ’s atonement, and the communal warning not to apostatize. Grindheim’s commentary is full of insight, offering eleven excursuses on central theological issues such as Melchizedek, heavenly rest, and the impossibility of repentance. His nuanced Calvinist reading of the warning passages—particularly Hebrews 6—affirms true believers will persevere, with the warnings functioning as means of grace. Grindheim’s grasp of Second Temple literature, Philo, and early church interpretation enriches his exposition. While scholarly, his writing is accessible and practical, showing how Christ’s priestly work shapes Christian ethics and hope. A serious yet pastoral commentary, Hebrews by Grindheim is a deeply theological and spiritually rich resource. It stands out for its clarity, historical depth, and relevance for today’s church. Highly recommended.
