Overview

2014 Outreach Magazine Resource of the Year

Slavery didn't end in 1833, when William Wilberforce's decades-long campaign finally resulted in the Slavery Abolition Act. It didn't end in 1863, when Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It didn't end in 1949, when the United Nations declared trafficking "incompatible with the dignity and worth of the human person." The sad truth is, slavery never ended. It just went underground, where it continues to exploit powerless men, women and children in horrific ways throughout the world.

Now for the good news: you have power.

In Refuse to Do Nothing, "Abolitionist Mamas" Shayne Moore and Kimberly Yim share their stories of coming to terms with the power available to them in their normal, everyday lives to

  • illuminate the shadows where those who traffic in people hide
  • compel corporations to fight slavery in how their products are made
  • motivate politicians to fight for human dignity
  • mobilize friends and strangers alike to fight slavery at home and throughout the world

Slavery doesn't end without a fight. But get to know Shayne and Kimberly and their abolitionist friends, and you'll find the power God grants to all who fight for the powerless, and the joy awaiting those who refuse to do nothing.

Epilogue

"Exposed to the horrific reality of some 27 million slaves in the world, two suburban stay-at-home moms make a commitment to make a difference. An accessible and encouraging read with lots of practical ways to engage, Refuse to Do Nothing is an important book that will help mobilize moms (and others!) to know you can make a difference as a modern day abolitionist."

"Combining startling numbers with impassioned voices, this book makes the daunting task of working for global justice possible and within reach, as the authors themselves are mothers of children in the home."

"Refuse to Do Nothing: Finding Your Power to Abolish Modern-Day Slavery delivers on its promise and not only arms you with the facts about slavery's pervasive influence, but offers tools and resources available to each person and steps we can take to join the rescue operation of its victims and the defeat of its perpetrators."

"Shayne Moore and Kimberly McOwen Yim write with candor about their own journey from 'suburban mamas' to modern-day abolitionists. . . . The authors present their story and information on how to go forward in an engaging, easy-to-process manner."

"This book educates, inspires, and gives practical 'how-to' steps for getting involved in the fight against one of the worst crimes against humanity . . . a crimethat is going on right now under our noses. Every person who is involved and/or interested in the tragedy of human trafficking should get this book."

"Moore and Yim represent the heart of the biblical advocate and beautifully answer the aching question many of us ask: But what can I do?"

"Kim and Shayne exemplify a long tradition of ordinary citizens refusing to sit on the sidelines while the poor suffer. They are relentless and an inspiration for us all."

"Refuse to Do Nothing offers the new anti-human trafficking activist a careful foundation for understanding and evaluating how to enter the battle and make her effort count. The authors build a solid case for individual responsibility in our own backyard. Additionally, the reflective exercises provide opportunity for a meaningful pause that fosters sustainable commitments rather than emotional highs that fade with time and distance. This is the small group study guide that I've been looking for and will recommend to students, community service groups and churches."

Shayne and Kim have found their voice in helping us recognize where our worlds may have grown small, and how, through practical choices and conversations, we can thrive as conduits of change as we make justice an everyday habit."

"Refuse to Do Nothing is not a comfortable read. It is intended to open our eyes to the brutal world of human trafficking, to break our hearts over what grieves God's heart and to make us uneasy if we do nothing. I pray that God will use this powerful and practical book to ignite in us a fierce resolve to engage this battle and that we will not rest until the last captive is freed!"

"The issue of modern slavery is far more horrific then most of us can imagine. But I believe it's far more hopeful than most of us can imagine too. Read this book reflectively and join those who believe you have something to offer this injustice."

"Read this book. The topic is daunting, I know. Just turn the page--and then the next. Keep turning the pages until you've read all the way through. And then, do something."

"Reader, you were made for this. Where you are today--your home, job, community, life--is exactly where God will use you to set captives free. In these pages Shayne Moore and Kimberly McOwen Yim invite you to join the particularly Christian work of ending human slavery. On each page you'll be saying to yourself, 'I can do this.' Thanks be to God."
