The Divine Euchologion and The Divine Liturgy of S. Gregory the Theologian was a special project published in memory of Philip Freeman, archdeacon of Exeter. Freeman was captivated by the Egyptian liturgies of Saint Basil, Saint Gregory, and Saint Mark, and intended to write a volume on their original manuscripts. He died before completing his work, but S. C. Malan took up the challenge in his honor and brought us these valuable English translations of the liturgies of Saint Basil and Saint Gregory. Solomon Caesar Malan (1812–1894) was an Anglican divine and orientalist. He was a phenomenal linguist, mastering French, German, Spanish, Italian, Latin, Greek, Georgian, Armenian, Coptic, Chinese, and English. About Saint Basil
Saint Basil the Great (AD 330–379) was bishop of Caesarea and an influential figure in the fourth-century Church. The Orthodox Church reveres him as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs, along with Saint Gregory Nazianzus and Saint John Chrysostom, and he is commemorated on January 1. He is best known for his monastic rule as well as his monumental Treatise on the Holy Spirit. His homilies on the six days of creation and the Psalter are also treasured.
About Saint Gregory
Saint Gregory of Nazianzus (AD 329–391), also known as Gregory the Theologian and Gregory the Younger is widely considered the most accomplished rhetorical stylist of the patristic age. The Orthodox Church reveres him as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs along with Saint Basil the Great and Saint John Chrysostom. His significant contributions to the doctrine of the Trinity are keenly felt today, and his poems and prose reveal his tremendous wisdom.
