Scripture commentaries often focus mainly on scholarly arguments and the minutia of interpretation. While still quite full of intelligent insight, J. M. E. Ross’ The Gospel according to St. Luke: A Devotional Commentary approaches the study of Luke’s Gospel less critically. In view of the devotional and practical purpose of this commentary, little attention is given to critical questions. Instead, Ross hopes to “elicit [the Gospel’s] value for faith and love. It is hoped that this commentary may in some measure kindle worship . . . and help to reveal the thing which in this beautiful book is most beautiful—the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.” This three-volume work contains nearly 100 essays suitable for anyone interested in absorbing the wisdom of Luke’s Gospel.
J. M. E. Ross is the author of numerous books, including The First Epistle of Peter: A Devotional Commentary, The Christian Standpoint, The Christian Brotherhood, and Lord, Teach Us to Pray: Sermons on Prayer.
