Overview

In A Concise View of the Succession of Sacred Literature, early Methodist theologian Adam Clarke defends the authenticity and authority of the canon of Scripture, seeking to show that “from the time in which it had pleased God to begin to reveal his will to man, there had been such an uninterrupted succession of additional revelations till the whole of the sacred canon was completed and such constant reference made to this revelation by learned men.” He also acquaints readers with ecclesiastical antiquity, giving them not only “a view of the successive writers in a chronological series . . . but also an account of their works, with faithful and distinct analysis of each.”

Adam Clarke (1760–1832) was one of the most influential Methodists to follow John Wesley. Clarke served an unprecedented three terms as President of the Wesleyan Conference, and his writings were particularly influential in the development of the doctrine of sanctification in the American Holiness movement. His six–volume Bible commentary defined Methodist scholarship, and remains well-used and respected today.
