In this volume, Dix analyzes liturgical practices throughout the ancient church and explores their biblical and patristic dimensions. He provides an extensively patristic defense for many of the church’s sacraments (devoting much of this short treatise to the Eucharist and the liturgy surrounding the Eucharist in the church), as well as the liturgies of worship, and shows how the Church has evolved in its understanding of liturgical practice over time.
George Eglinton Alston Dix (named Gregory in religion) (1901–1952) was an English monk and priest of Nashdom Abbey, an Anglican Benedictine community. He was a noted liturgical scholar whose work had particular influence on the reform of Anglican liturgy in the mid-twentieth century.
