Digital Logos Edition
The virgin birth of Jesus Christ is a foundational doctrine of the Christian faith, yet few Christians have a clear understanding of its full meaning and theological implications. An accomplished scholar, Dr. Robert Gromacki writes in a readable style, expounding and exploring the miraculous event of the incarnation for readers of all levels.
Beginning with a fundamental doctrinal summary of the Trinity, Gromacki then considers the primary passages in both Testaments that present the virgin birth and the deity of Christ. He works through problem texts and supplies plausible alternatives where evangelicals differ. Topics addressed in the book include the two Gospel accounts of the virgin birth (Matthew and Luke), popular misconceptions about the virgin birth, physical and biological implications of the virgin birth, and the so-called parallels to the virgin birth in pagan literature.
With the Logos Bible Software edition of The Virgin Birth, all Scripture passages are tagged to the Bibles in your library. “The origin of Jesus’ humanity is the central question. If He was born apart from male parentage, then He must be God manifest in the flesh. If He was not virgin conceived, then He was not God. These questions and answers are not mere academic issues. They are eternal life and death matters. The rejection of Christ’s deity and His virgin birth caused the Pharisees to die in their sins and to receive everlasting judgment (John 8:24). The same is true of the modern liberal.” (Pages 12–13)
“No mere man can redeem his fellow man; only God can redeem the soul (Pss. 49:7–8; cf. 49:15). Thus, Jesus as the redeemer must be God.” (Page 36)
“Finally, the incarnation and the virgin birth do not involve the perpetual virginity of Mary.” (Page 108)
“Fifth, a similar error would make the Holy Spirit the father of Jesus’ human nature.” (Page 104)
“However, the hypostatic union of the two natures in Christ remains as a supreme paradox. Berkhof, the great Reformed theologian, rightly wrote: ‘The doctrine of the two natures in one person transcends human reason. It is the expression of a supersensible reality, and of an incomprehensible mystery, which has no analogy in the life of man as we know it, and finds no support in human reason, and therefore can only be accepted by faith on the authority of the Word of God.’” (Page 127)
A truly remarkable study of the deity and virgin birth of Christ [that] may well replace Machen’s monumental work as the best study of this vital subject.
