In this commentary on Romans, Robert Mounce addresses the human inclination for trying to attain righteousness by works. Along the way, he answers Christians’ most pressing questions. What happens when humans turn their back on God? Does God make humans righteous? Does justification by faith sanction sin? Is Christianity practical? Mounce’s thorough, readable scholarship is free of professional jargon, making clear, present-day applications of Paul’s message.

“First, a right-standing before God comes ‘through faith.’” (Page 40)
“And thirdly, this right-standing before God is available ‘to all who believe.’” (Page 41)
“The good news carries the fragrance of death as well as the fragrance of life. What it means for each person is determined by one’s personal response to the message. To a visitor in an art gallery who said he didn’t like a certain classic painting came the response, ‘Sir, the pictures are not on trial, only the viewers.’ The gospel is not on trial. To accept it is to find revealed in it the righteousness of God. To reject it is to find revealed in it the wrath of God.” (Page 14)
“Romans is a magnificent presentation of the gospel—the good news that God has provided a righteousness based not on what man can do but upon what God did in sending His Son a sacrifice for sin. Man’s responsibility is to respond in faith. Justification is not the reward for human striving but the free gift of God for those who will accept it by faith.” (Page 8)
“Anthropologists confess that they are unable to find a tribe of people anywhere in the world who do not worship some sort of divine being.” (Page 10)
