Overview

Tom Carter began reading Spurgeon in his late teens, picking out striking statements from the nineteenth-century British pastor’s sermons and quoting them in his Bible teaching. After spending ten years reading all of Spurgeon’s 3,561 sermons, Tom compiled this book of 2,200 quotations. The quotations are alphabetically arranged by subject, with a section on specific Scripture texts, from Genesis to Revelation. Carter has included a subject index and a Scripture index, too.

Top Highlights

“, ‘Preaching that leaves out the cross is the laughingstock of hell.’” (Pages 2–3)

“The number at the end of the quotation indicates the source (e.g. 43.323) The number before the period refers to the volume number of Spurgeon’s original sermon series. The number after the period gives the page number. In the example above, the quotation will be found in Volume 43, page 323.” (Page 8)

“Full assurance is not essential to salvation, but it is essential to satisfaction. May you get it—may you get it at once. May you never be satisfied to live without it.” (Page 15)

“119George Whitefield said, ‘We are all born Arminians.’ It is grace that turns us into Calvinists.—2.124” (Page 27)

“Although this Prince of Preachers consistently had non-Christians flocking to hear him, he never shrank from proclaiming the themes of election, the sovereignty of God, the total depravity of man, the certainty of judgment, the terrors of hell, the deity of Christ, justification by faith, and atonement through the Savior’s blood. He knew these were the truths that God honored for the salvation of souls.” (Page 3)

A marvelous reference tool, but much more. It is one of those rare books that will compel you to keep on reading—and still wish for more. This profound collection is certain to be a treasured and much-used volume.

—John MacArthur

I have read Spurgeon more than any other single author outside the Bible. My own soul has rejoiced a thousand times in the spiritual perception provided by the prince of preachers. Thom Carter has done us all a favor in capturing the more poignant insights of that London Divine. These spiritual insights are now yours for quick reference.

—W. A. Criswell

An excellent anthology of Spurgeon quotations, arranged both topically and by Bible reference. Spurgeon is the master of illustration and the “illuminating remark” that makes Scripture live.

—Warren Wiersbe

Hardly any preacher can afford to be without this volume. It is invaluable in stirring thought and imagination, suggesting ways of presenting biblical truth, and providing material for quotation. Perhaps as important, the book can be read devotionally.
