This course examines pastoral ministry in three areas: preparation, responsibilities, and relationships. The unit on preparation focuses on a pastor’s qualifications, devotional life, and personal life. A unit on responsibilities analyzes preaching and teaching, worship, pastoral care, leading, training, forming cell groups, and special services is also included. The final unit examines a pastor’s relationships with layleaders, staff, work, and calling. This is a principle-centered study to lay a lifelong foundation for the pastoral ministry.

“The ministry is not a career that you choose but a divine call to which you surrender.” (Page 16)
“At times, quoting Scripture passages will comfort and sustain as nothing else will. But that seldom occurs during the early stages of a crisis when the persons involved are still numb from shock and grief. The beginning of a tragedy is a time to simply be there, a time for an arm around the shoulder and a supporting hand.” (Page 95)
“God’s call to ministry is the minister’s anchor. An anchor keeps ships in place despite storms or high winds. When despair tempts them to doubt their worth, ministers fall back on the hope and promise of God’s call to steady them and to strengthen their faith.” (Page 17)
“our character grows as we spend time being with the Lord, and our competence is enhanced as we do ministry for the Lord.” (Page 20)
“Walking with God means walking at His pace, not too slowly or too quickly; it means staying beside Him.” (Page 18)
Richard Exley was pastor of Christian Church for twelve years, after which he has become highly involved in mentoring of couples, men, and those in ministry. He has written numerous books and is a dynamic speaker.
