Exodus 20:1–17 ESV 1 And God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”1 John 2:1–6 ESV 1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.IntroductionJohn has been very clear in his presentation of the truth. He has drawn the contrasts of Light and darkness, truth and lie, fellowship or no fellowship, forgiveness or self deception. He now turns to the basis of true fellowship with God and living a life that is pleasing to God.1. Defender and Sacrifice v1-21 John 2:1–2 ESV 1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.a. Comfort v11 John 2:1 (ESV)1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.John addresses his readers with a term of endearment which can best he translated “dear children.” He is their spiritual father, so to speak, and they are his offspring. The term occurs rather frequently in this epistle; therefore, we conclude that the term reflects John’s authority as an apostle in the church and at the same time reveals his advanced age. He is the person who is able to relate to fathers and young men and address them with a term of endearment.Kistemaker, S. J., & Hendriksen, W. (1953–2001). Exposition of James and the Epistles of John (Vol. 14, pp. 250–251). Baker Book House. He stands next to his readers and encourages them in their struggle against sin. He knows that they wish to live a holy life, but occasionally they sin.Kistemaker, S. J., & Hendriksen, W. (1953–2001). Exposition of James and the Epistles of John (Vol. 14, p. 252). Baker Book House.John speaks words of comfort. “But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father.” If a believer commits a sin, he still remains a child of God.Kistemaker, S. J., & Hendriksen, W. (1953–2001). Exposition of James and the Epistles of John (Vol. 14, p. 252). Baker Book House.b. Counsellor v11 John 2:1 (ESV)1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.Advocate - παράκλητος - parakletos - helperJohn 14:16 ESV 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,John 14:26 ESV 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.John 15:26 ESV 26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.John 16:7 ESV 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.As sinners, we have the best possible helper because he is righteous. That is, in his human nature Jesus is our brother (Heb. 2:11), is acquainted with our frailties (Heb. 4:15), saves us (Heb. 7:25), and is our intercessor.Kistemaker, S. J., & Hendriksen, W. (1953–2001). Exposition of James and the Epistles of John (Vol. 14, p. 252). Baker Book House.Hebrews 2:11 ESV 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,Hebrews 4:15 ESV 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.Hebrews 7:25 ESV 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.c. Propitious v21 John 2:2 ESV 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.1 John 4:10 ESV 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.Romans 3:25 ESV 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.Hebrews 2:17 ESV 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.propitiation — noun. the means of appeasing wrath and gaining the good will of an offended person; especially with respect to sacrifices for appeasing angered deities.expiation - In the Bible both expiation and propitiation are part of God’s atoning work. Christ’s sacrifice both propitiates (turns away) the wrath of God and expiates (covers) human sin. God’s redemptive work is both personal, or relational, and objective.Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible Chapter 2Christ’s “advocacy” is limited to believers (1 Jn 2:1; 1 Jn 1:7): His propitiation extends as widely as sin extends:
Here John refers to the extent of Christ’s atoning sacrifice. Scholars usually comment that the extent of Christ’s death is universal but the intent is for believers. Or in different words, Christ’s death is sufficient for the whole world but efficient for the elect. KistemakerJesus died for all the people who believe in him and who come “from every nation, tribe, people and language” as a “great multitude that no one [can] count” (Rev. 7:9). Kistemaker,2. Knowledge and Love v3-5a1 John 2:3–5 ESV 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him:a. Knowing God v31 John 2:3 ESV 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.Knowing God implies that we learn about him, love him, and also experience his love. We gain our knowledge of God when we strive to do his will in the actual experiences of life. Knowing him, then, means that we live in perfect harmony with him by keeping his law. Kistemaker, S. J., & Hendriksen, W. (1953–2001). Exposition of James and the Epistles of John (Vol. 14, p. 255). Baker Book House.b. Commandments v31 John 2:3 ESV 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.1 John 3:24 ESV 24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge Chapter 2John is countering the problem of antinomianism, a heresy very much still with us, that lessens our obligation to obey God since we are saved by grace alone.
c. Truth or Lie v41 John 2:4 ESV 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,James 2:14–16 ESV 14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?John 17:17 ESV 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.John 3:36 ESV 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.3. Christian Conduct v5b-61 John 2:5–6 (ESV)5 By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. He quotes the person who claims to have come to know (perfect tense) God but who fails to keep (present tense) (God’s commands. John calls him a liar. That is, this person is a walking lie who says one thing and does the opposite (compare 4:20; Titus 1:16). The word liar describes the character of the man whose entire conduct is opposed to the truth. Kistemaker, S. J., & Hendriksen, W. (1953–2001). Exposition of James and the Epistles of John (Vol. 14, p. 256). Baker Book House.John 15:4–7 ESV 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.ConclusionColossians 1:9–10 ESV 9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;1 John 2:1–6NKJV
