Psalm 78:5–8 ESV 5 He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, 6 that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, 7 so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; 8 and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.Acts 2:37–47 ESV 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.IntroductionWe continue to look at the New Testament churches as we seek to understand and apply the words of Jesus John 4:24 “24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”” We have seen something of the Corinthian church but will look at more in future sessions. For now we consider the very first New testament Church in Jerusalem. But before doing so I want to remind you of certain truths about the Bible.SlideActs 2:42 ESV 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.Slide1. InscripturationInscripturation refers to the act of committing truths revealed by God to writing. It signifies the permanent recording of divine revelations in the Scriptures, which are considered God-breathed and authoritative. The term is derived from the Latin words "inscriptus" meaning "written" and "scriptura" meaning "scripture" or "the Bible". Inscripturation emphasizes the importance of written texts in conveying and preserving the Word of God.2 Timothy 3:16 ESV 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,2 Peter 1:21 ESV 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.Slide2. The BibleSlidea. Old and New TestamentBaptist Affirmation of Faith 1966 The Holy ScripturesBy the Scriptures, or Bible, we mean only the sixtysix books of the Old and New Testaments. The books known as the Apocrypha, not being inspired, form no part of the Scriptures. In the absence of the original manuscripts, God has divinely preserved his work in many faithful copies. Careful translations are to be made that all men might personally read God’s Word in their own language.

The Apostolic AgeThe Apostles were appointed by God to establish the Christian Church. They had particular gifts enabling them to declare the inspired, authoritative Word of God. This office ceased after the death of the last Apostle....the fact that any office existed in the apostolic church is no evidence that it was intended to be permanent. In that age many spiritual manifestations and endowments were needed for the organization and propagation of the church, but are no longer required. We no longer have prophets, nor workers of miracles, nor gifts of tongues. Hodge, C. (1995).Slidea. Who Are the Apostles?Slidei. CommissionedActs 1:7–8 ESV 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”English Standard Version Chapter 1Pete
Slideii. New AppointmentActs 1:20–22 ESV 20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms, “ ‘May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it’; and “ ‘Let another take his office.’ 21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.”Acts 1:23 ESV 23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias.Acts 1:26 ESV 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.Slideiii. PaulActs 9:3–6 ESV 3 Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. 4 And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” 5 And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6 But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.”Acts 9:13–16 ESV 13 But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem. 14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.” 15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”Acts 9:16–18 ESV 16 For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” 17 So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized;Slide4. The Church at JerusalemSlidea. PreachingActs 2:14 ESV 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.Acts 2:22–24 ESV 22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.Acts 2:32–33 ESV 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.SlideActs 2:36 ESV 36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”Slidec.
