Psalm 78:26–31 ESV 26 He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens, and by his power he led out the south wind; 27 he rained meat on them like dust, winged birds like the sand of the seas; 28 he let them fall in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings. 29 And they ate and were well filled, for he gave them what they craved. 30 But before they had satisfied their craving, while the food was still in their mouths, 31 the anger of God rose against them, and he killed the strongest of them and laid low the young men of Israel.Acts 2:42–47 ESV 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.SlideActs 2:44–47 ESV 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.IntroductionWe have seen how the 3000 plus believers worshipped together. Such amazing things had happened in a very short period of time, about the same time period as when Shania last met with us on a Sunday. The New Testament, Christian Church had been born made up of many different nations.SlideActs 2:7–12 ESV 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”No wonder that there was such a sense of awe and many wonders and signs were being don by the apostles. We have considered their more formal worship activity now we see the outworking of true worship and the desire to honour God in their lives.Slide1. Loving Unity v44-45SlideActs 2:44–45 ESV 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.Slidea. Common Experience v44Acts 2:44 ESV 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. This is the first time in Acts that Luke designates the members of the church “the believers.” For lack of a definite term (for example, Christians [see 11:26]), he writes, “those who believe.” The scoffers who refuse to accept Jesus in faith are excluded and have no part in the Christian community. Faith in Jesus is the principal requisite for belonging to the Christian church. Only the people who believe in him share in the unity that becomes visible in worship and communal life. Kistemaker,Acts 11:25–26 ESV 25 So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.Slideb. All Things in Common v44Acts 2:44 ESV 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common.Slidec. Meeting Needs v45Acts 2:45 ESV 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.2 Corinthians 9:7 ESV 7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. After Pentecost, the new converts in Jerusalem “shared all things. They began to sell their possessions and goods and they gave to anyone who might have need.” The communal sharing of material goods was not a divestment of wealth. Rather, it was a willingness on the part of the owners to place their possessions at the disposal of all those believers who were needy. Kistemaker,Acts 5:1–4 ESV 1 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and with his wife’s knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”Slide3. Committed Worship v46-47aSlideActs 2:46–47 ESV 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favour with all the people.Slidea. Daily v46Acts 2:46 ESV 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,Luke continues to depict life in the Christian community. He prefaces his description of the activities of the believers with the expression every day. KistemakerSlideb. The Temple v46Acts 2:46 ESV 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,Acts 3:1 ESV 1 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.Ninth hour - 3:00pmThe Christians in Jerusalem go to the temple, which for them is God’s house. They consider themselves Jews who have seen the fulfilment of the Old Testament Scriptures through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Kistemaker,Solomon’s Portico — A colonnade built by Solomon on the temple where rabbis met with their Disciples to engage in public teaching.Slidec. Hospitality v46Acts 2:46 ESV 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,Luke emphasizes the unity, harmony, joy, and sincerity of the believers. These elements are the fruits of the Holy Spirit, who is at work in the hearts and lives of the early Christians. Kistemaker,Slided. Praising God v47aActs 2:47 ESV 47 praising God and having favour with all the people. What a testimony to true Christianity! These Christians live a life of praise to God and as a result are praised by the people. They demonstrate the power of the gospel and the presence of the Spirit. Thus they are living witnesses for Christ. Here the missionary church is at work, for the people noticing the Christian conduct of the converts speak in favour of the church and are drawn to Christ. Kistemaker, SSlide4. Sovereign Grace v47bSlideActs 2:47 ESV 47 And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.Acts 4:4 ESV 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.ConclusionThe members of the Jerusalem church exhibited a unique spontaneity in taking care of the poor. They did so in obedience to Christ and the apostles, who taught them to “remember the poor”. Yet the apostles never told anyone to sell property to support the needy. Instead they stressed the joy of voluntary giving. Kistemaker, SBlessed be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds foreshadows that above.John Fawcett - Pastor at Hebden Bridge was laving after 7 years in 1772.
