11 “But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me. 12 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels. 13 Oh, that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways! 14 I would soon subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes. 15 Those who hate the Lord would cringe toward him, and their fate would last forever. 16 But he would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”
    Ephesians 5:1–21 ESV
1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. 4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. 5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not become partners with them; 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” 15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

    Introduction
Last time as we looked at Colossians we saw the need for proper preparation in worship. Paul spoke of the objective realities, who we are, what we do and the vital nature of the Word of Christ controlling all that we are. To the Ephesians Paul is saying very similar things but from a more subjective viewpoint.

    1. Be Filled with the Spirit v18

    Ephesians 5:18 ESV
18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, ( debauchery means bad sexual behaviour, drinking too much alcohol, taking drugs, etc.:)
Paul is drawing a contrast between the attitude of the world and the Christian.
There are times when exhilaration of heart and mind is entirely proper. Scripture makes mention of shouting for joy (Ps. 5:11; 32:11; 35:27; etc.), fulness of joy (Ps. 16:11), good tidings of great joy (Luke 2:10), joy unspeakable and full of glory (1 Peter 1:8).
    Psalm 5:11 ESV
11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you.
    Psalm 32:11 ESV
11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!
    Psalm 16:11 ESV
11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
    1 Peter 1:8 ESV
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,

Being thus filled with the Spirit believers will not only be enlightened and joyful but will also give jubilant expression to their refreshing knowledge of the will of God. They will reveal their discoveries and their feelings of gratitude. Hendriksen, W., & Kistemaker, S. J.

    a. Addressing One Another

...when believers get together they should should edify each other, speaking to one another in Christian song, and doing so from the heart, to the praise and honour of their blessed Lord. Hendriksen

    b. Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs

    Ephesians 5:19 ESV
19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,
The term psalms in all probability has reference, at least mainly, to the Old Testament Psalter; hymns, mainly to New Testament songs of praise to God and to Christ (verse 14 above, in which Christ is praised as the Source of light, containing perhaps lines from one of these hymns); and finally, spiritual songs, mainly to sacred lyrics dwelling on themes other than direct praise to God or to Christ. There may, however, be some overlapping in the meaning of these three terms as used here by Paul. Hendriksen
The point to note is that by means of these psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, Spirit-filled believers must speak to each other. They are not merely reciting what they have committed to memory. “Daughter, do you know that your Redeemer lives?” said the director to the soloist. After an affirmative answer he continued, “Then sing it again, and this time tell us about it.” She did, and there were tears of joy and thanksgiving in every eye. Hendriksen,

    c. Making Melody

    Ephesians 5:19 ESV
19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,
Melody is the quality of having a pleasant tune.
It is to be pleasing to the Lord.
    Genesis 8:20–22 ESV
20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. 22 While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”

    d. With Your Heart

    Ephesians 5:19 ESV
19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,
    Psalm 19:14 ESV
14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

    Hebrews 10:19–22 ESV
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

    3. Proper Thanksgiving v20

    Slide
    Ephesians 5:20 ESV
20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

    a. What is It?

Thanksgiving is grateful acknowledgment of benefits received. It presupposes that the person who engages in this activity recognizes three things:

    i. That the blessings which he enjoys were bestowed upon himself, so that in all honesty he cannot give himself the credit for them;

    ii. that he is totally unworthy of them;

iii. that they are great and manifold.

    Hendriksen, W.,

    Slide
    Colossians 2:6–7 ESV
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
    Slide
The expression of gratitude is therefore a most blessed response to favours undeserved. While it lasts, worries tend to disappear, complaints vanish, courage to face the future is increased, virtuous resolutions are formed, peace is experienced, and God is glorified. Hendriksen,

    b. When Must it take Place?

Always believers can and should give thanks because there is never a moment when they are not under the watchful eye of Jehovah whose very name indicates that his mercies are unchangeable and will never fail. Hendriksen,

    c. For What Must Thanks Be Given?

Paul answers, “for all things.” Hence, gratitude must be felt and expressed for blessings physical and spiritual; “ordinary” and extraordinary; past, present, and future (the latter, because they are included in an infallible promise); and even for things withheld and for things received. Hendriksen,
    Slide
    Romans 8:28 ESV
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

    d. How Must thanks Be Given?

The answer is “in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,” because it was he who earned all these blessings for us, so that we receive them all “together with him” (Rom. 8:32). It is also he who will purify our petitions and thanksgivings and, thus purified, will present them, together with his own intercession, before the countenance of the Father. Hendriksen,
    Romans 8:32 ESV
32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?

    e. To Whom Must thanks be Given?

The answer is “to (our) God and Father.” Hendriksen, W.,
    Slide
Since, however, the Ephesians knew that all their blessings were constantly coming from God, the God who in Christ Jesus is their Father and since they also were aware of the fact that they constituted part of “the Father’s Family”, so that every benefit which they had received, were now receiving, or would still receive, proceeded from his love, they must have been able to understand the reasonableness of the exhortation that to this God and Father of theirs they should ascribe constant thanksgiving and praise. 4. Reverence for Christ v21

    Slide
    Ephesians 5:21 ESV
21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Paul states: 21. subjecting yourselves to each other out of reverence for Christ. Again and again our Lord, while on earth, emphasized this very thought, namely, that each disciple should be willing to be the least (Matt. 18:1–4; 20:28) and to wash the other disciples’ feet (John 13:1–17).
    Matthew 18:1–4 ESV
1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them 3 and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
    John 13:13–14 ESV
13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
    Slide
    Ephesians 4:1–2 ESV
1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
He therefore stresses the fact that “out of reverence for Christ,” that is, with a conscious regard for his clearly revealed will, every member of the body should be willing to recognize the rights, needs, and wishes of the others. Thus believers will be able to present a united front to the world, the blessing of true Christian fellowship will be promoted, and God in Christ will be glorified. Hendriksen,
    Conclusion

    Psalm 95:6–7 ESV
6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! 7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice,
    Hebrews 12:28–29 ESV
28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.
