  • Psalm 82:5–8 ESV
5 They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken. 6 I said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you; 7 nevertheless, like men you shall die, and fall like any prince.” 8 Arise, O God, judge the earth; for you shall inherit all the nations!
    Psalm 1:1–6 ESV
1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

There are 150 Psalms in the Old Testament. There are about 350 quotations in the New Testament.
The Book of Psalms: From Suffering to Glory, Volumes 1 & 2 The Psalm Collection

There are individual psalms that span almost a thousand years from Moses (

The Psalms are divided into five books:-
    Book 1 - 1 - 41
    Book 2 - 42 - 72
    Book 3 - 73 - 89
    Book 4 - 90 - 106
    Book 5 - 107 - 150
    Authors are:-
    David - 71
    Asaph - 13
Asaph was the son of Berechiah (1 Chron 6:39), a Levite whose influence on Israel’s worship shaped generations of religious practice. He served as a music leader and seer during David’s reign1, occupying a position of considerable prominence in the kingdom’s spiritual life.
    Sons of Korah - 11
    Numbers 26:9–11 ESV
9 The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the Dathan and Abiram, chosen from the congregation, who contended against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they contended against the Lord 10 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died, when the fire devoured 250 men, and they became a warning. 11 But the sons of Korah did not die.
    Solomon - 2
    Ethan - 1

    Types of Psalms
There are four particular types of Psalm, Praise, Prayer, Thanksgiving and Preaching. These divisions are somewhat arbitrary as many can contain more than one of these elements. We will be considering one of each of these four divisions.
Vital to remember that the Psalms are part of the divinely inspired Authoritative Word of God, hymns, though inspiring are not.

    a. Truly God is Good to Israel v1-3

    Slide
    Psalm 73:1–3 ESV
1 Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. 2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. 3 For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

    b. In Vain Have I Kept My Heart Clean v4-15

    Slide
    Psalm 73:4–9 ESV
4 For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. 5 They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. 6 Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. 7 Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. 8 They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. 9 They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth.
    Slide
    Psalm 73:10–15 ESV
10 Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. 11 And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?” 12 Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. 13 All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. 14 For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning. 15 If I had said, “I will speak thus,” I would have betrayed the generation of your children.

    c. I Discerned Their End v16-22

    Psalm 73:16–22 ESV
16 But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, 17 until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. 18 Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. 19 How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! 20 Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms. 21 When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, 22 I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you.

    d. You Guide Me With Your Counsel v23 - 27

    Slide
    Psalm 73:23–27 ESV
23 Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. 24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. 27 For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.
