Rev. Andre L. Pickens
Pastor • Lighthouse of Refuge Baptist Church
- I am a Baptist and a Calvinist, but I love and respect my Lutheran brothers and sisters for their commitment to the Bible, their confessions, and tradition. They do not meddle in the culture or politics and are true to Christ's commission to preach the gospel of justification by faith in the finished work of Christ, and they certainly are more loving and non-legalistic than some other traditions. I have been reading Lutheran theologians for about thirty-five years, particularly Luther, Gerhard, and Walther. I just purchased Luther's Works and wish Evangelicals could breathe more of the spirit of liberty pervades Luther's writings.
- Gerhard has always been one of my favorite Lutheran Divines. Whether Reformed or Lutheran the Seventeenth Century age of Orthodoxy produced some of the greatest theological minds to ever walk the planet. There was not this preoccupation with specialization that is characteristic of modern theologians almost to a man the theologians of the Age of Orthodoxy were adept in every branch of theological knowledge and ranged over the entire field of theological encyclopedia with ease. Very happy to see this great work translated and in print.
- This is an excellent resource on the history of Biblical interpretation. Dr. Bray happens to be one of my favorite contemporary theologians. He has a superb grasp of church history and the history of doctrine that helps the reader see the contextual relationship between historic theology and its contemporary expression.
