Vaughan Smith
- Excellent, highly readable, and very practical discussion of Union with Christ, a doctrine that was central to Christianity from the beginning (John 14-17, Paul's letters) and into the 18th century. J. T. Billing's and R. Letham's books on the subject are valuable for additional study, but this book provides a better introduction and is more practical for daily living. This is one of the most helpful books I have ever read.
- This is a wonderful introduction to Church History! When I taught Church History to undergrads I assigned this book along with Bruce Shelley's Church History in Plain Language. When I was a seminary student Gonzalez's much longer The Story of Christianity (2 vols.) was among the several books we had to read. This much shorter Essential Guide does a marvelous job of sketching the major periods and movements. It's uniquely helpful as an introduction or as a review.
