- While the basic thesis of the book is good and admirable, and a welcome warning, I wish the book delved more into the ancient Hellenistic world. As it is, many of the "corrections" that are offered are not solidly based on ancient Mediterranean culture but on other modern examples. In this way, the book therefore almost becomes self-defeating in that we are asked to exchange modern Western mores for those that are just as removed from the ancient world.
- As MattGZat noted, this is not the revised edition by Vermes, Millar, et al. The differences between the old version and the revised version are significant. One example: old version -- "Whether pre-Christian Judaism regarded the Messiah as simply human, or as a being of a higher order, and especially whether it attributed to him pre-existence, cannot, with the uncertainty about the dates of authorities, be positively decided." Same section in the new version: "Pre-Christian Judaism -- in so far as its messianic expectations can be conclusively documented -- regarded the Messiah as a fully human individual, a fully royal figure descended from the house of David."
