- To the right of the translation portions of the Word Biblical Commentary Series are two to three numbers ranging from 2-4 and they have a plus sign between them. Ex. 2+3 or 4+3 or 2+2+2. They don't apply to the notes beneath each translation. What do these numbers represent? Any help would be appreciated.
- I looked in two WBC commentaries I own and did not see such markings in the translation sections. It might be unique to the volume(s) you are looking at. Perhaps there is an explanation in the preface or introduction to the volume, as it does not seem to be a feature of the entire series. I only own a handful of volumes from this series, though, so it could be more common that my experience would suggest.
- Thanks Geoff. A customer service rep at Christianbook.com explained that these numbers represent the metrical character (meter in the Bible). I’m trying to figure out what that means and if it’s beneficial to know. I found this article but it’s still as clear as mud. www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/10738-meter-in-the-bible
- As Dr Lawson goes through the entire bible, he identifies and explains each verse that applies to the 5 Doctrines of Grace (TULIP) as well as to the biblical topics of Divine Sovereignty and Divine Reprobation. RC Sproul better defined TULIP using RSLEP and I think Dr. Lawson further improves on it with RSDIP (Radical Depravity, Sovereign Election, Definite Atonement, Irresistible Call, Preserving Grace). Don't hold me to it but I ballpark counted 154 bible proof texts for Radical Depravity, 69 for Sovereign Election, 67 for Definite Atonement, 89 for Irresistible Call, and 70 for Preserving Grace. Dr Lawson also gives about 58 proof texts for Divine Sovereignty and about 21 for Divine Reprobation. This book provides a "God-centered, Christ-exalting way of viewing salvation which is evident throughout the entire Bible" by identifying and explaining the Doctrines of Grace.
- It's interesting to see how Dr. Lawson and RC Sproul have dug into the intricate details of the Doctrines of Grace. The frameworks they use (which I will probably always struggle to remember) like RSLEP and RSDIP are most helpful to explain these doctrines; I hope to introduce them to my students. The abundance of proof texts you mentioned underscores their commitment and my task at hand… to read more.I believe it’s a valuable contribution for the saints with respect to evangelism such that as they understand, and more importantly embrace these teachings, they will not only be able to witness more effectively but also be more secure in what and why they believe in our Lord Jesus Christ’s redemptive work. Thanks again.
