• This book is an important work from an unlikely set of source material: Near Death Experiences. If you are not familiar with Near Death Experiences (NDEs) then John Burke is a good place to start as he has carefully and systematically reviewed NDEs in a way that helps Christians make sense of them. NDEs are taken seriously in medical and professional literature and should also be taken seriously by theologians. Burke's argument is not to generate new theologies based on ethereal or mystical experiences, but rather to bring the mystical to Scripture in order to shed living light on areas of Scripture or attributes of God which may previously have seemed theoretical or academic. For example, the Bible says that God loves you, but what does that really mean in practice? What does it feel like? How real is that love? Has anybody directly experienced it in a profound way, and what do they have to say about it? Does what they say match with what we read in the Bible? Such are the questions Burke seeks to examine. Perhaps more helpfully, in reading this book I concluded that if I could only give ONE BOOK to somebody who was struggling with faith, re-visiting their Christian roots, or facing a personal crisis of any kind, then Burke's "Imagine the God of Heaven" might be a pretty good choice. It's an incredibly encouraging book, chock full of Biblical truths and, most importantly, focused on staring into the face of the One who loves us. Knowing Christ and His love for us is deeply encouraging and helpful for any human being. Burke's work here is important. Whether you have been down the NDEs rabbit trail or you find yourself highly skeptical of any such suspected mumbo-jumbo, you will be well-served in reading this book, and I suspect you will very much enjoy the read as well!
