• I really appreciate Keener's level headedness. Willingness to interpret the text and not draw assumptions based on "tradition" but also taking the Bible at it's Word and not reading into it the cessationists view.
    1. Great dictionary. Very useful for background of ancient cultures studies
      1. This book gives attackers of the faith ammo to attack what the Bible says. By stating the Bible is not truthfully speaking about Satan or Demonic forces is to say the Bible doesn't speak truth about Jesus. If the Walton's view is true, then we can't take Jesus serious, who did Jesus speak to in the desert? Why would the Bible say He spoke to Satan in the desert if it wasn't true? And if it's not true, how can we believe in the incarnation, or the resurrection. If Satan and the demons aren't real, is hell real? If hell isn't real is heaven real? Just a bad book. Skip his one. Not sure what the Walton's we're thinking on this one. Usually there stutt is rock solid.
        1. This is just a reply to your review. I haven't read the book and am not trying to demean what it can offer. Although I wouldn't mind gleaning any new perspectives from this book, it's likely not worth wading through the focus on philosophical hermeneutics; and the entire edifice presented seems akin to modern scholars and churches explaining away the gifts of the Holy Spirit and anything miraculous as having been for a time but no longer needed. If anything, we need sober and conservative information about what our adversary, the Devil was, and is still capable of today. We need to start with what it means when the Bible says he is the "god of this world." And then weigh what the crushed head, the damaged authority still can accomplish, even, if not especially, in the lives of believers, whom are the scriptural targets of his attacks. And if the Devil and his followers haven't learned new tricks since Christ destroyed or otherwise damaged much of their spiritual power, then he is misrepresented in God's word. And as for me, that's not an optional viewpoint. Living a Christian life that's either mediocre (not worth any effort) or personally quite close to God (not giving ground) can often make the Devil seem like a myth. But get involved in missionary work where it's most needed. Push back against the alternate kingdom Lucifer built up over centuries and then again after the flood, and literally offered to Christ, and you will know that this spiritual war is real. It's like when we watch a conflict on the news or our phone feeds. Some pictures. A few articles. Maybe our investments take a small hit. But otherwise, it doesn't touch us. And we soon turn the channel. And those who do evil deeds in the darkness are very happy when we do this.
