Mark Smith
- Enough praise has been lavished on this commentary but let me add mine. One may not agree with Fee's every conclusion, but one will gain considerably from consulting this work. I find Fee's reconstructions of the setting of 1 Corinthians very helpful, as well as (most of) his comments. His manner of writing is engaging. As D. A. Carson has said, Fee couldn't be boring if he tried. With this I agree. This is not your average commentary by any means. If you are preaching or teaching on 1 Corinthians (as I have), I'd strongly recommend you purchase Fee as soon as you can.
- The best commentary on Daniel that I have consulted. I am using it with great profit in a sermon series on Daniel. Tanner covers the whole gamut of questions about and interpretations of the Book of Daniel with fairness. He does not hesitate to declare his own view and backs up his conclusions with ample discussion. One need not agree with him on all matters to profit from this commentary. It is expensive, so wait for it to go on sale if you can.
- Dr. Jobes wrote her PhD thesis on the Hebrew text of the Book of Esther and has written other scholarly articles dealing with the book. Yet for all her academic capabilities, she has produced a volume that will be of great help to those without her technical background or abilities. Those seeking help to teach or preach this intriguing book will not go away disappointed. True to this volume being in the NIV Application Commentary series, Dr. Jobes has given due attention to the application of the text to our contemporary situation. In fact she has done an outstanding job. Her applications are never trite, and are openly evangelical in viewpoint. Even those who have studied this text before will appreciate the clear and concise way that Dr. Jobes handles the text and then seeks the lasting principles and theological truths in the text that lead to helpful application today. This volume should be on your short list of commentaries when you study Esther in preparation for preaching or teaching.
