Matthew Lee
- I have the paper version of the Apologetics Study Bible paired with the HCSB, as well as this digital version. The HCSB was a groundbreaking translation with terms that draw my attention to passages I would normally only half-understand. I would read the HCSB and really start to understand God's working and connect with the "weirdness" of the spiritual world, but the Apologetics notes consistently obscured the majesty and power of God by dismissing the extraordinary and replacing it with lifeless miracle-free "normalized" explanations. It is primarily because of this resource that I realize that "arguing" apologetics is the wrong approach. At best, it promotes an argumentative and closed-minded attitude rather than compassionate and responsive dialogue. At worst, it weakens the impact of the majesty of God on both parties by peddling a sterilized "user-friendly" gospel where the only mystery left is the resurrection (that apologists must grudgingly accept as unexplainable to be called a minimal Christian).
