Really quite difficult to overstate how helpful this particular commentary is. It certainly isn't a technical commentary - but far from glossing over difficult/complex sections, it grapples with them in a sensitive manner. The technical work has clearly been done and the benefits of it are very obvious, even if the author doesn't lay it all out in detail. It is a pastoral commentary. Davis is exceptionally gifted at drawing out the key thread in each chapter and handling it in a concise and clear manner. His writing is brilliantly vivid. He is consistently Christ focused - no commentary I have read on 1 Samuel (and I have read quite a few) - comes close to stirring the heart to worship like this one. A real gem.
