- Numbers 30 The chapter begins with the explanation regarding a man who makes a vow to the Lord. Yet, the majority of the chapter deals with women who make vows. If a woman lives with her father and makes a vow, the father can disapprove and she does not have to keep the vow. The same happens with a married woman because she is subject to her husband. At the same time both a widow and an orphan must keep the vow because they are not under the authority of a man. In our 21st century western mindset this may be difficult to understand and relate to, however we need to understand that we are speaking of an agricultural and very close knit community. Women were protected by their fathers, brothers and husbands. Our chapter explains the rules in a society which had this structure. Heavenly Father, I thank You because ultimately, Your are the protector and provider for ALL. 16 These are the laws which Adonai ordered Moshe between a man and his wife, and between a father and his daughter, if she is a minor living in her father’s house.
