- Hi Ed, I'm not posting to enter a debate so please don't misread my comments. I will ask, have you read Sam's book "Is God anti-Gay?" I found it helpful. His treatment of the text is solid.
- I have been following Sam's activities and writings for a while now. Sam says many things that are right or at a minimum, sound orthodox. But he says a number of things and endorses a number of positions that are inconsistent with Christian praxis where human sexuality is concerned. Livingout.org is filled with ungodly advice and guidance for men who enjoy their desire to have sex with another man. Allberry's comment that Jesus suffered from identity confusion himself is nothing short of blasphemous when placed in this context. It isn't only what men say that a discerning Christian must evaluate. It is what they are DOING with what they are saying that is the true tell. That is how I judge Allberry's work. No one who argues that it is morally neutral to desire to have sex with someone of the same sex handles the text solidly. Same-sex attraction is itself a disordered desire that also runs against nature. It is a desire to be mortified, hated, and repented of. Anything less than that is teaching people to be comfortable when they are still under the judgment of God. This isn't an issue over which we can agree to disagree. This is a "line in the sand" issue. Scripture couldn't be clearer.
- I appreciate your commitment to Scripture. Whether or not Scripture is clear was never the issue. We both know Scripture is clear and probably agree. I'm not exactly sure he isn't actively practicing repentance by recognizing the sinfulness of the desire, turning away from the desire, and praying that God will take it from him. That seems legit and Biblical. Now, as to the comment of Jesus suffering from identity confusion, if that is correct, I agree with you. Thank you for your thoughtful input.
