Witnesses into Samaria
In Acts 8, we see the beginnings of the fulfillment of Jesus’ prophetic words that the power of the Holy Spirit upon his followers would lead to the witness of his name reaching Samaria. Philip’s preaching is accompanied by signs and wonders, along with the people believing. In the area is a magician named Simon who takes notice of the power of the gospel preached. This Simon has made quite a name for himself so that he is known as “the power of God that is called great.” A name he has either taken upon himself or has been given to him by the populace. This is due to his amazing works of magic which impress the people. However, when he hears the gospel message he becomes a believer. In this case the gospel is more powerful than his celebrity.
The depth of his belief is questionable though. For when he observes Peter and John lay hands on those who had not yet received the Holy Spirit, he wants to acquire this power. Peter’s rebuke of his jealous and bitter heart shows his conversion may not be yet complete. He seems to desire holding own to the notoriety of his magical works and add the power to lay hands to his repertoire. Not to be, for God will not share devotion.
An angel then directs Philip to the desert road between Jerusalem and Gaza. There he encounters an Ethiopian eunuch returning from worship at Jerusalem. The Spirit instructs Philip to approach and join the chariot. The eunuch is reading from the Isaiah chapter 53. Philip offers to explain the meaning and begins to preach the good news about Jesus. The eunuch asks to be baptized and Philip baptizes him. The good news about Jesus will then be carried to yet another distant land. The Spirit then snatches Philip away and he is found in Azotus, which is the city of Ashdod. Once a Philistine stronghold, even here the good news will be proclaimed.
