Praise for His Promises
Our praise must spring from the promises of God to us and for us, or they will be unintelligible to God and man. The modern day worship crowds sing praises to pop culture and cultural relevance when praise needs above all else, to have Scriptural relevance.
Praise must spring from a deep devotion to the Word of God, and the God of the Word, if it is going to be accepted of God.
A prime example of failed worship would be found in 2 Samuel 6. The Ark of God, which symbolized the presence of God in the midst of Israel was not in its proper place (i.e. the inner sanctuary of the Tabernacle) due to a war with the neighboring country of the Philistines. King David, ever zealous for the Glory of God decided to bring it back to Jerusalem and place it in its rightful place.
So David gathered the whole band.
2 Samuel 6:2
2 And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the Lord of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims.
He spared no expense. He even bought a brand new cart to put the Ark of God on! This was no ordinary cart you know. It was a royal wagon. He even had the sons of Abinadab (meaning, father of nobleness) to chauffeur the Ark.
2 Samuel 6:3
3 And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart.
He also got the band playing a thrifty tune.
2 Samuel 6:5
5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.
But tragedy struck. They praise band led the procession to Nachon’s threshingfloor, and the oxen pulling the cart shook the Ark. Uzzah reached forth and steadied the Ark, and God struck him dead.
2 Samuel 6:6–7
6 And when they came to Nachon’s threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.
7 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.
What happened? Think about it. All David was doing was trying to praise the Lord and to honor Him by bringing the Ark back home. Why would God be so inconsiderate of their worship? This made David hold off on bringing the Ark back to Jerusalem. He left the Ark at the house of Obed-edom, and word came to him three months later that God was blessing the house of Obed-edom. So David decided to give it another try. Instead of ignorantly worshiping, he decided to get into the Scriptures and find out if he had missed something. He found out that he did.
1 Chronicles 15:2
2 Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites: for them hath the Lord chosen to carry the ark of God, and to minister unto him for ever.
He discovered from Numbers 4:2-15, 19-20 & Numbers 7:9 that the Levites were the ones charged with transporting the Ark and anyone else not following the due order would be in rebellion to the Word of God and would be punished for it.
We may think this is harsh, but then we are not truly praising God. To praise means to exalt and extol. The one giving the praise is acknowledging his subjection to the Object of his worship. To praise God any way I want and not after the due order is to proclaim to God that I am not in subjection, but that He is in subjection to me.
My praise must be Scriptural or it is not praise at all. It will not be accepted of God and it will not point others to God. May my life’s praise of God be found in my devotion to the God of the Bible. May I not follow the world’s version of worship, but God’s prescription.
Back to Psalm 56, we discover that it was God’s Promises that caused David to return praise to God.
Psalm 56:12
12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.
So if our praise is to exalt God, it must be upon His promises.
