Poor Joseph… Joseph had been thrown into prison (remember how he was wrongfully accused), and while he was there, he was joined by the Pharoah’s baker and butler. They both had dreams, and Joseph was able to interpret both of them with great accuracy. Now, the butler told Joseph that when he was out of prison, he would be sure to mention Joseph before the Pharoah-but as the story goes, Joseph was forgotten. I’m sure Joseph probably wondered why he was there in prison…waiting. He waited two full years before the butler remembered Joseph. God had been preparing Joseph in prison for a great responsibility. It seemed as though Joseph’s whole life was spent in waiting. In those times, I’m sure that Joseph probably had to learn some patience. And sometimes God would have us to wait as well. Do you ever feel useless while you wait? If you’re anything like me, you probably feel like you should be doing something. If I may, I would like to borrow this illustration from my favorite devotional, Streams in the Desert:
“There is no music in a rest, but there is the making of music in it. In our life melody, the music is broken off here and there by ‘rests,’ and we think we have come to the end of the tune. Not without design does God write the music of our lives. Be it ours to learn the tune, and not be dismayed at the ‘rests.’ They are not to be slurred over, omitted, not to destroy the melody, not to change the keynote.”
How eloquently said! For anyone who understands music, you know that the rests in a song lead on to a more beautiful melody. If we try to ‘play’ in the rests, the music loses the beat.
Just for today, remind yourself that although there is no music in a rest, there is the making of music in it!
