ISAAC WATTS: THE FATHER OF ENGLISH HYMNODY
Birth: July 17th, 1674 || Death: November 25, 1748
=> Was called "The Father of English Hymnody" for good reason.
=> Wrote an upwards of 700+ hymns.
=> Hymns he wrote include "Joy to the World', "When I Survey The Wondrous Cross", "At the Cross", and so many more.
=> His hymns were considered too contemporary for his time and many criticized his hymns for not being direct translations of the Psalms which was the mode of music in the church called "Psalmody", a method advocated by John Calvin.
=> At this time in history a lot of churches sided with John Calvin in using Psalmody as the mode of music in the church rather than Martin Luther's stance of using Hymnody as the mode of music.
