"by faith" or "through faith"?
For the Lutheran editors of CSSB (rewording NIV Study bible notes) it was a change they made often: for them, believers lived "by faith", not "through faith" (the NIV 84 uses both, with "by faith" more often, both occur in relevant texts). Did they want to consistently cite a creedal formula?
This nuance escapes me as an ESL speaker - or is there none?
- I suspect it is a reaction to some of the "name it/claim it" theology in the USA. As for creedal formulas, it was an issue in the 2001 translation of the Book of Concord. If I recall correctly, the German can go either way and they went to the Latin text for how to render the English. Again, if I recall correctly, there is an article about this in The Lutheran Quarterly, in their issue on the new translation of the Book of Concord. For a while this whole issue was on their webpage but it does not seem to be anymore.
