Have you ever found yourself in a tight spot and in need of help? Our text on Sunday was a continuation of last week. We read that David's son, Absalom, was attempting to lead thousands of Israelites in an insurrection to dethrone David. All day long, David had felt these insurrectionists squeezing in all around him. Think of a boa constrictor or python wrapping up its prey, and you understand how David probably felt. Then in the evening, David cries out again to God in prayer. As he does, he remembers who God is, while rehearsing and rejoicing in God's past faithfulness in his life. You see, David knows that God is righteous and always does right by His people. Like a good father, he unashamedly comes to God with his pain as a child does with their parents. Yet, as he comes to God, he remembers how He has freed him from affliction in the past. David likely rehearsed how God had loosened the grip of King Saul as he sought to kill him. He probably rejoiced as he recalled God's faithfulness in granting him victory over Goliath. He possibly even recounted times in which he was tending to sheep, and how God gave him the strength to overcome a lion and a bear that attacked. It is important to know that these are imperatives in our verse. David is commanding an audience with God, asking Him to be gracious and to hear his prayer. Jesus tells us in Luke 11:5-10 CSB to have a confident persistent boldness as we approach our Father for mercy and grace (Heb. 4:16 CSB). Mission, when you find yourself in a tight spot, remember who God is, and His past faithfulness, and then confidently approach him as an adopted son or daughter with your need. God wants to hear from you!
Take some time to pray the Lord's prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 CSB. As you pray for daily needs, bring your request to God as a child who is confident in his Father's love. Pray not only for your needs but for the needs of other Christians that you know. Thank God that you can approach Him as Father, for he has brought you into His kingdom through repentance and faith in Jesus. Take some time to remember, rehearse, and rejoice in God's salvation in your life!
Scripture Meditation from September 26th, 2021
"Answer me when I call,
God, who vindicates me.
You freed me from affliction;
be gracious to me and hear my prayer."
Psalms 4:1 (CSB)
