Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you!
– Psalm 67:3
Dwelling with God in an eternal Sabbath should lead us to glorify the God of all creation. All people everywhere should praise God for His unsearchable goodness. But a great many people do not bless God, and that is why we send out missionaries to the end of the earth.
John Piper put it this way, “Missions exist because worship doesn’t.” The church is on a mission to bring all nations into the Kingdom of God. We are to be taking dominion of the earth, not just by subduing the physical creation and declaring God’s Good Words, but with the final goal of bringing all people into the kingdom that awaits.
The sacrifices made by the priests of Israel were not just rituals, but rather intercessions on behalf of the people. But remember, not all the people of Israel were true Israel. There were many in the tribes who did not follow God with their heart and soul. Nevertheless, the priests sacrificed on their behalf and worked to make sure all of them knew God. Missionaries do that today.
More often that not, we believe that the missions and evangelism is necessary because people have it so bad – they have bad marriages, bad careers, or bad kids. They have drug problems, sex problems, or greed problems. We think the Gospel is just a broom sweep of those things. But, rather, the great goal of missions is to introduce people to the King of the Universe and the good news that they can dwell forever with Him in the New Creation.
