And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,
– Ephesians 1:22
A further assurance to us in the church is the headship of Christ. All things have been put under His feet. This means there is no power or person who can ever stand against Him. He is the all-powerful ruler of all creation. He has all authority and strength.
The preceding verse says His power is “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.” In the local church we are often fearful of an individual or a family disrupting the unity of the body. Sometimes we fear the government. And, under all of it, we are aware that Satan himself is at work to dismantle the body of Christ.
But Christ is above them all. And, as the head of all things, He was given to us in the church. No government tyranny can uproot it. No persecution from within or without. No family or divisive person. Not even the chief evil, Satan himself, can ever stop the unity of the body of Christ.
This does not mean that we will not fail at times to have unity. It does not mean that sin won’t disrupt our peace. It doesn’t mean some outside persecution won’t cause us to stumble and doubt. It does mean, however, that when those things happen, we can turn in faith to the One who has bought the church with his own precious blood and has been seated in the heavenlies to bring His body, the church, to perfect unity and faith. He will not fail.
