At Home Weekly // Summer Week 9 // July 31 - August 6
At Home Weekly is designed for you to use during the week with your son or daughter. You’ll find out what they learned today at church, and can help them prepare for next week by exploring the theme (or Ponder Point) and spending time together in God’s Word.
God described the relationship between believers when He called us the body of Christ. Jesus is the head. But just as a human body has many different parts that play different roles, God uses each person who is part of the body of Christ to build up the rest of the body. The Holy Spirit gives the body of Christ gifts of leaders, gifts of serving that build up the Church, and the nine gifts of the Spirit (1 Corin-thians 12:7–10) to empower Spirit-filled believers as needed for the challenges of the moment. All gifts are given to build up the Church, the body of Christ.

PONDER POINT: GOD IS THE HOLY ONE
Peter’s Letter to the Jewish Christians
1 Peter 1—2
Peter wrote this letter to the Jewish believers scattered throughout five Roman provinces. He encouraged them to live a victorious Christian life even when their faith caused them to suffer persecution. He wanted these believers to live out their faith courageously—even though it would cause them to be different from the rest of the world.

Share these facts to get the conversation started.
• This letter was not written to one particular church, but to believers scattered throughout five provinces of the Roman Empire.
• Peter wrote this letter to remind the scattered people of God that their suffering would not last forever.
• God calls believers to be “foreigners” or “exiles” on earth—living a life that is different from, but still attractive to, those around them. A Christian’s real home is heaven.
Connect as a family
In an empty water bottle or jar pour equal parts of water and oil. Show your children how the two can be mixed together but will eventually separate. Read
1 Peter 1:1–12 (*Fire Bible, p. 1536). Explain that just as the oil and water are together but still separate, that we as Christians live together with non-Christians, but our behaviors, thoughts, and attitudes should be separate because we seek to please God.
After reading the Scripture passage, discuss these questions together:
• In what ways does God call us to be different from the rest of the world?
• How does it feel to know that as believers our true home is in heaven?
• Share with your children that God loves them and desires them to live a life that honors God. Discuss what that may look like in various situations.
These questions can easily extend into the rest of the week. Look for opportunities to bring conversations about God’s holiness into your everyday life as a family.
Remember verse
The Remember Verse focuses on a character trait of God that’s highlighted in next week’s portion of The Big God Story.
But these are written that you may believe
that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,
and that by believing you may have life in his name.
John 20:31
BLESSING
Blessings are often used in the Bible. A blessing can be a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words to encourage and guide.
A blessing to pray over your child:
(Child’s name), may you be holy as God is holy, through the power of His Holy Spirit. May you stand out as a light in the darkness.
