You will need a stopwatch or timer (you can use your phone!) for this activity. Tell your kids they will stand up and sing a familiar song (such as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”) to themselves for varying amounts of time. When they think it’s been exactly the amount of time you told them, they will stop singing and sit down. Start with 10 seconds, then 30 seconds, then 55 seconds. The last time, tell them 99 seconds (1 minute and 39 seconds). Whoever is the closest each time, wins!
When you finish the activity, ask: Was it hard knowing how long to wait? What’s the longest you’ve ever had to wait for something you were excited about? In this week’s part of God’s big story, we learned about Abraham and Sarah waiting a long time for a promise from God to happen. They didn’t know how long they had to wait, but God’s promise was fulfilled because God keeps His promises, no matter what! We may not always know how long we’ll have to wait for God’s promises either, but we can always trust Him to keep His promises.
Life Connection
Stargazing for Promises
SUPPLIES: snacks, chairs, blankets, binoculars
Wait until twilight, then find a special spot to gather with a great view of the sky. As you wait for the sun to set, remind your family about God’s promise to Abraham and Sarah: Sarah would have a baby and their descendants would be as numerous as stars in the sky!
Before any stars are visible, ask your kids how many stars they can count. Ask this question again as stars become visible, then ask again every few minutes, as you stargaze. As the sky grows darker, more stars will become visible, and your star count should increase.
For a very long time, Abraham and Sarah couldn’t understand or see God’s plan. However, simply because we can’t always see or understand a promise, doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Stars are never hidden, but we can only see them under the right conditions, which might require waiting, like how we waited tonight for the sky to get darker.
