38 years ago on November 21, the world lost a great man. His name was Don Johnston and he was my friend, brother in Christ and mentor. He and his daughter-in-law were both killed by a drunk driver in Greeley, CO in 1984!
Don was a medical missionary and had served years in Africa (see picture.) When we met, he was a Family Physician and lived out his faith in every area of life. I met him in Canon City, CO in 1974. He was active in the first church I attended after surrendering my life to Christ.
I was a young man searching for his identity and God provided Don as a mentor to me. He filled in the gaps in my deficient upbringing. He modeled a Father's love to me. He showed me how to love a wife and nurture children.
He showed me how to learn from mistakes and how important repentance and humility are. He helped me to see the value and endurance of relationships, and why they are really not disposable.
He taught me how to laugh at myself instead of being embarrassed. In spite of my youth, inexperience and rough edges, he walked me into Bible studies with men of influence and position, as their equal. He bolstered my self esteem and self image.
He flew me in his plane, included me in his family activities, shared his life with me. He brought both of my daughters into the world!
He was my friend. I thank God for Don Johnston and for sending him into my life at such a crucial time.
I sure do miss him, but I have determined to be the man he was to me to other men!
Your legacy lives on Don! See you soon!
