Have you ever stopped to thing about the question, "Who is Jesus?". It seems like such a simple question. John goes into great detail in answering this question in John chapter 1. Obviously, John nails the answer, and we will look at what John has to say. However, I want us to think about this question on a broader scale.
Love Worth Finding answered this question in 5 parts. I want us to take a look at these 5 aspects of Jesus and try to deepen our understanding of Who Jesus is.
The preeminence of Jesus
John 1:1–3 (NASB95)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
John 1:14 (NASB95)
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
The word preeminent means, "surpassing all others". This is absolutely true about Jesus. John declares that Jesus is God. There are so many eyewitnesses that testify to the fact that Jesus is who He said He was. Look no further than the resurrection. Some 500 people saw resurrected Jesus at one time after His resurrection. There is so much overwhelming evidence to prove who Jesus is. This is important because if Jesus is God, He absolutely deserves to be 1st place in our lives. That is preeminence.
Jesus reveals the Father
Colossians 1:15 (NASB95)
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
We are able to know God the Father because of Jesus Christ the Son. The Greek word for "image" is where our word "icon" comes from. Jesus Christ is the "icon" of God the Father. In other words, Jesus is the exact representation of God the Father.
Colossians 2:9 (NASB95)
9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,
You cannot know God the Father without 1st knowing Jesus Christ.
Power and preserver of creation
John 1:3 (NASB95)
3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
Jesus is more than just the creator. He is the One that preserves creation.
Colossians 1:17 (NASB95)
17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
People have tried to disprove the biblical account of creation for 100's of years. The problem is that there is no evidence to support any other view than the biblical account. Our world is so complex that it would have taken a great many 1000's of perfect accidents for the big bang theory to even be considered. As a matter of fact, a person would be called crazy if they said a thing came out of nothing in any other context. However, that is exactly what the evolutionist would have you believe. The truth is that the biblical account is actually the most rational and the most logical explanation for creation.
The purpose of creation
Colossians 1:16 (NASB95)
16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.
The purpose of life might be one of the most debated things in history. It is one of the great philosophical questions of all time. Col. 1:16 tells us that all things are not simply created by Jesus, but they are created for Jesus. That means you too. You are created for Jesus.
Selfishly, we want to believe that this world was created for us. This is simply not true. We are created to worship and glorify Jesus Christ. Our lives should be lived in such a way that we fulfill our purpose in creation.
Jesus reconciles the fallen
Colossians 1:21–22 (NASB95)
21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—
We would have no hope if not for Jesus. We would be dead in our sin if not for Jesus. If you are still in your sin, you don't have to be because of Jesus.
Who is Jesus? He is Holy God! He is the one that bore our sin on the cross! He is the one that is able to redeem anyone that will submit to Him as Lord.
Romans 10:9–10 (NASB95)
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Romans 10:13 (NASB95)
13 for “WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.”
