We need to wrap our heads, and our hearts, around the fact that Jesus Christ is the Word of God spoken to the world.
Jesus Christ is described as the Word.
John 1:1–3 (NASB95)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
John 1:14 (NASB95)
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John is unequivocally stating that Jesus has always existed with God the Father, and is God. Not only that, but John states that, "all things came into being through Him..."
Jesus is the creative action of God the Father. Jesus also explains God the Father.
John 1:18 (NASB95)
18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
Jesus Christ fulfills the Word.
John 1:16–17 (NASB95)
16 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.
17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
People like to "cherry pick" Scripture to suit or justify their life. People point to the last half of verse 17 in order to devalue living the life that we have been called to live. Yes, grace and truth are realized through Jesus Christ. However, that does not mean that obedience to the Word of God has been rendered unimportant.
Matthew 5:17–20 (NASB95)
17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
19 “Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
We have been shown grace because of Jesus Christ. We know truth because of Jesus Christ. That doesn't mean that the manner in which you live your life is unimportant. Jesus has fulfilled the Law. Jesus Christ is our Lord. Our Lord has called us to live in accordance and not contrary to His commands.
Many people have a low view of Scripture in our world today. Sadly, some (most) of the blame for that falls on Christians. We tell people the Bible is the Word of God and then we treat His Word as though it were just some book in our lives.
Is Jesus Who He said He was? Is Jesus Who He says He is? If the answer is yes, it is, then stop treating the Bible so flippantly. Read His Word. Study His Word. Meditate on His Word. Allow His Word to transform you, instead of you attempting to transform it.
