Mary-Ellen in CH151 Introducing Historical Theology: Apostles to the Reformation
3 years ago

Anyone out there working through this course? I'm now finishing Segment 4, which encourages interacting with others studying the course. Reviewing NT passages identified in the course as discussing "hairesis," I was struck with the observation that Paul wasn't so much concerned with differences in belief per se, as he was with the conflict and factionalism that belief differences created, especially when the proponents of differing beliefs were self-promoting, seeking financial support that allowed them to remain idle, and justifying their own self-indulgent, immoral behavior. I.e., the issue with heresy is not so much about orthodox belief, as it is about church unity and ethical behavior. Paul doesn't exclude variants in belief that still honor unity and morality.

Also just finishing Segment 4. What struck me is the value to writing the Apostles & Nicene Creeds on my mind & heart again. Exited to work through church history. Pray God increases your faith and you bless someone else today...
